Neil Costello

Obituary

Neil Costello, 74, of Algonquin, died peacefully on September 13, 2019, at his home, with his family by his side.
Neil was born on December 28, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Thomas and Marie (O’Connor) Costello. He attended Erasmus Hall High School, and thereafter, proudly served in the United States Air Force. On October 22, 1976, he married Rosemary Sposato, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Chicago. Together, they resided in Algonquin for over forty years. Although he was in sales for many years, Neil's true passion was his income tax practice. He started the practice fifty years ago, and remained active in it until the time of his death. Neil enjoyed playing golf, Friday night card games, and listening to Irish music. An avid fan of travel, he visited all 50 states and all 7 continents. He was a loyal New York Yankees fan, and had a fondness for animals of all kinds, particularly "pound dogs." His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. A member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley, Neil was devoted to the Catholic faith, and was a man who truly worked to serve the underprivileged. Neil was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose sense of humor and sound advice will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Neil (Carolyn) Costello, Brendan (Rachael) Costello, and Alexis (Ben) Rittenhouse; and his seven grandchildren, Ronan, Maura, Maeve, Declan, Catherine, Anneliese, and Thomas. He is also survived by his siblings, Catherine (Matt) Touhy, Margaret Meaney, James (Pat) Costello, Paul (Maria) Costello, Barbara (Howard) Wadzuk, and Mary Costello; his sisters-in-law, Pat (Joe) Donohue and Carmella (John) Segvich; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Jane Ann; brothers, Thomas and Joseph Costello; and brother-in-law, Mark Meaney.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 19, 2019, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. Visitation will also be on Friday, September 20, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, all at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. So sorry to hear this. Although I didn't know your father, Brendan, from the Obituary, he sounded like a really really great guy. Please accept our condolences.

We were watching golf on tv at my dads condo in 1989. Somehow channel got changed to monster truck show. My dad noted what a silly concept. Later on uncle Neil noted that to a different type of audience watching grown men hit a little white ball into a hole was equally silly. Then and now that perspective and empathy I find quite admirable.

Brendan, I am so sorry for you loss. I know from our conversations that your dad was a major influence in your life. There is nothing I can say to ease the pain right now but I can tell you from my own personal experience, that the tears will eventually turn to smiles, laughs and fond memories as time passes. May God watch over your family during this difficult time.

We may have lived several states away and didn’t get to see each other often but that never made us feel far away as he was always passing on his jokes via email. I treasure the times I did spend with Uncle Neil (and Rose) - always welcoming us into their home as I traveled about. When he came back East for family parties, you knew he was in his glory to be around family. He was always laughing, telling the best stories, and singing his Irish songs. He will be greatly missed. Take comfort in knowing he will always be with you all in spirit. I am happy for those he is now reunited with in heaven.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Neil. We were friends from the early 70’s until the past few years. Several years ago something happened and I still do not know what but the relationship that we had for so long dissolved. Knowing Neil as I did, I could just tell something was not right but I did not pursue it. Until those years, we both considered ourselves as best friends. We hung out together, laughed together, played golf together and partied together. Even when we parted ways, I still considered Neil as one of my best friends and you cannot take that away from me. Rest in peace my friend. Johnnie
