Daniel J. Smith, 67 of West Dundee, passed away at his home on Wednesday morning, September 21, 2011, following a lengthy illness.
Daniel J. Smith was born August 5, 1944 in River Rouge, Michigan, the son of Clement and Mabel (Bodrie) Smith.? He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart and served as a Staff Sergeant.? On October 21, 1967, he was united in marriage to Anita M. Soga in Jersey City, New Jersey.? The couple made their home in New Jersey for a few years and in 1972 moved to Schaumburg and to West Dundee in 1990.? Daniel was an accounting manager and worked for United Airlines for 42 years, retiring in 2009.? He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, enjoyed golf, wood working, the White Sox, CNN &MSNBC.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Anita of West Dundee, his son, Daniel J. (Harpal) Smith, Jr. of London, UK, his daughters, Andrea M. (Paul) Gerritsen of West Dundee, Melissa A. (Joe) Becker of Lake in the Hills, his grandchildren, Andrew, Alexa, Natalie & Nathan Gerritsen, Joseph & Michael Becker, Azure & Avalon Smith, his brothers, Reginald Smith & Gary (Ann) Smith all of Michigan.? He was preceded in death by his sister, Nathalie and his brother, Patrick.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a Funeral Mass at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.? Burial will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Saturday.? In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research.

I worked in Tax at United for 14 years and had many occasions to work with Dan. He was always a class act, particularly during the grim years while the company was emerging from bankruptcy. He still found time for a joke and a smile, which I will always remember. RIP Dan, my prayers are with you and your family.
