Mark Stephen Cooney, 54 of Danville, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013 at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville.
Mark was born November 15, 1958 in San Diego, California the son of Gary W. and June Ann (Barnes) Cooney. He was raised in Itasca and following graduation from high school enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a firing technician in the artillery division in Germany for fourteen years. Following his discharge he returned to Illinois and made his home in Danville. Mark was extremely outgoing and friendly, he never met anyone he didn’t like. Very talented, he loved music and the harmonica and was very creative and expressive in his poetry writing.
He is survived by his son, Stefan Cooney of Germany, his parents, Gary & June Ann Cooney of Huntley, his twin sister, Karen (John) Manak of Shorewood, his baby sister, Kym (Bert) Beckman of South Elgin, three nephews, one niece and numerous aunts, uncles & cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 24th at DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. on Monday, February 25th at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, 122 S. Michigan Avenue #1700, Chicago, IL 60603 or the Disabled American Veterans, 2122 Taylor Street, Chicago, IL 60612.
