Reverend John “Jack” T. Heraty, STL, 82, of Huntley, died peacefully, September 24, 2021 at Friendship Village of Schaumburg, where he was a resident.
Father was born on June 23, 1939 in Chicago, IL, to Peter and Catherine Heraty. Father Heraty attended St. Maur Seminary, South Union, KY (1963-1967). He then attended The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC (1969) where he received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL). Father went on to further his studies at Loyola University, Chicago, IL (1973) where he received a Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling. He later attended DePaul University, Chicago, IL (1976) and received a Master’s Degree in Sociology.
Father Heraty was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend George Biskup at St. James Parish, Rockford, on May 27, 1967. Father’s first assignment was in 1967 as Parochial Vicar at St. Patrick Parish, St. Charles (1967-1971). In 1970 Father was appointed Chaplain for the Illinois State Training School for Boys, St. Charles (1970-1993). He was later appointed Chaplain of Mooseheart Child City & School, Aurora (1979-1998). Father was then assigned Pastor at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Sandwich (1998-2009) and retired there from active ministry on July 1, 2009. His families remembers him as person who loved to travel, cook and spend time with family. He was notorious for hosting Thanksgiving dinner and proudly showing all of his slides from all of his travels. He was a loving brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
Father is predeceased by his parents Peter and Catherine and his sister, Lucille. Father is survived by his sisters, Maureen (Lawrence) Lantero, Elizabeth “Betty” Pellikan and his brother, Peter Heraty (Nancy) and by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Visitation will take place 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., at the church prior to the Funeral Mass. Burial will take place at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.

He will be greatly missed. He presided over our 40th and 50th wedding anniversary. He was a very caring person and was always so kind to us, thank you Father for being our Friend. Eternal Rest Father Jack may you Rest In Peace.
I knew Father growing up at Mooseheart. He was always there for me. I remember when my father died , Father Heraty helped me through the bad days. I remember being an alter boy many times. I feel bad I never kept in touch with him, but I know he's watching over me. I will miss him very much. He was my best friend growing up at Mooseheart. Rest in pease Father. I will never forget you..

So sorry to hear about Father's death. I remember him from St. Patrick's where he was assigned after his ordination. He was a kind, sociable person. Eternal rest unto him.
we are so sorry to hear about Fr. Heraty. He was our very good friend for many years. He had our son's funeral Mass at St. Mary, Huntley il. We will miss his coming to dinner & his phone calls.

Father has been a large part of our family for many years. Baptised kids ,stopped to visit, attended our 50th anniversary celebration and renewed our vows for us. He went out to dinner many times with us and we always had such a good time. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, dear friend. Fr. Jack was a wonderful family friend of my parents and he con-celebrated our wedding Mass. We are certain he is enjoying dinner with Joe & Sandy in the heavens!
Fr. Heraty was a breath of fresh air when he arrived at St. Paul the Apostle in Sandwich. He was so easy to approach about anything. We shared a bond in a spiritual way and in friendship. RIP-you will be missed.

Father Heraty was a great example of kindness and love! I have not forgotten him from many years ago at Mooseheart. Just saw his name in Moose magazine this month. It brought back quite a few memories. To his family and dearest friends, my condolences on the loss you feel.
