Yamei Lee

Obituary

Yamei Lee passed away peacefully on December 8th, 2021 at the age of 83 after battling lung cancer.
Born on June 6th, 1938 in Vietnam, Yamei was orphaned at a young age but quickly adopted by a couple from China who raised her in Laos. Early on, she joined the workforce. She was most known for selling homemade tofu throughout the markets of Laos. This allowed her to provide for her family and put her sister in school.
In 1956 she met her husband. Together they had 9 children between Luang Prabang and Vientiane. She became devoted to raising her family. Seeking a better life, they decided to flee Southeast Asia.”

They spent 2 years at a refugee camp in Thailand before finally relocating to the United States in 1980 where she spent the remainder of her life.
There was no doubt that Yamei was always determined to support her family, even without proper education or knowing the English language. It was clear this was her passion. As her children began to build families of their own, she became a grandmother. Just as she did with her own children, she helped raise all 13 of her grandchildren. It became her full-time job when she wasn’t tending to her garden, which she gave just as much love and care to.
When her grandchildren grew older, she would sit by the window awaiting their return. She spent her days crafting knit vests, hats, and scarves or bracelets and necklaces to give them. During birthdays, holidays, and special events, she would finally be reunited with her grandchildren. It filled her with joy recalling each one of them, sharing stories and laughs.
Even as her health deteriorated, she pushed through with her own sense of humor. While all the way, her family never left her side. Yamei will always be remembered for her mothering nature and generosity. Her strength and bravery have left all that have met her with everlasting admiration. Though she will be missed dearly, she will always continue to live on in our hearts.

I did not know Yamei personally, but knew of her because of my friendship with her granddaughter Brenda. She always spoke with so much affection about her and it was clear she loved her deeply. My heart goes out to the family during this difficult time. Take care.
