Obituary

Ernest "Ray" Stevens, 94, died peacefully in his home on February 20, 2022.

Ray was a husband, dad and grandpa. He loved his wife, Lori. They were married for 65 years. He loved all his family, and was proud of everybody. His siblings passed away years ago and he missed them, especially his older brothers with whom he shared a particular humor borne from hardscrabble beginnings.

He found an electronics vocation in the Army Signal Corps, and started a family and a career in telephony (when phones were connected by wires) after he was discharged. He was a technical guy and loved to talk about technical stuff and do technical things. The day he passed we found an oscilloscope in the attic. Resistors and electrical connectors too. He was likely planning to build or fix something.

He was a teacher and a writer. He never stopped learning. He taught himself calculus in his eighties. He earned a certificate in photography from a local college when he was 92. He liked crossword puzzles and history books.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine Stevens, his son, Mark (Gail) Stevens, and his grandchildren, Matthew Stevens, Trisha (Nate) Parks, and Daniel Stevens.

Visitation for Ray will be Wednesday, March 2, 2022, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley.
Mass will be Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.
