Mary 'Kay' Nelson

Obituary

Kay Nelson, 79, of Huntley, passed away April 4, 2022, in her home with her husband of 31 years, Dan Nelson, by her side, along with the prayers of many.

Kay was born on May 13, 1942, in Mankato, MN. The main love of her life was Dan. She loved everything about her life with him.
Kay was very empathetic and would be the first one to offer help to anyone in need. She loved people. If she were standing in a line in the grocery store, she would be friends with the person in front of her and behind her before she left. She loved dancing: her sisters would see her dancing to American Bandstand in the basement after school. She continued her love for dancing with Dan, any chance she could get. She loved sewing; children’s’ outfits, weighted blankets, and covering furniture. She loved thumbing through magazines or designing projects for Dan to build. She loved watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in their various activities. She also loved looking at all the flowers Dan planted for her along with all the animals that visited their gardens. She was an avid Chicago Cub and Chicago Bears Fan.

She is survived by her husband, Dan and her children Tom Birdsey, Sue Hempe (Dave), and Bill Birdsey. Devoted grandmother of Teela Martinez, Kristina Vinduska (Jason), Khatrina Main, Kayla Hempe, Amanda Hempe, Heather Harris (Luke). Loving great grandmother to Cameron, Isaac, Josiah, Emily, Kiera, Moriah, Kendra, Cora, Colton, Caelyn, Jared, and Callie.

Kay was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Roberts (Doug) and her granddaughter, Rosemary Roberts.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 2 p.m. to time of Memorial Service 3 p.m. all at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley.
Please consider wearing Cubs or Bears (or Sox or Packers because she loved a good rival) on this day.

Dan I am so very sorry for your loss. Kay and I worked on the ladies luncheon’s together and had so much fun. Then I had to leave for AZ. to help family and she helped my husband with all the phone calls. Such a nice lady. She will be missed. May God bless you and your family.

Kay was the bright spot for so many years in the Medical Records Department at St. Joseph Hospital. She always made Doctors, Staff and Patients feel as they were the most important person in her day. I remember how proud she was. Dan, of the pictures you had framed for her which she had hung in the main MR reception area. You were indeed the center of her world. So happy you had all those years together. My thoughts are with you, and may Kay rest in peace.
