Stanley Werner

Obituary

Stanley J. Werner, 70, of Lake in the Hills, formerly of West Dundee, died peacefully on April 17, 2022, at JourneyCare in Barrington.
Stanley was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 29, 1951, to parents Stanley and Aylene (nee Moore) Werner. He graduated Larkin High School in 1969, and then attended Elgin Community College. Stan worked many years at Elgin Industries as the director of purchasing while raising his family. He then enjoyed a 16-year career as a locomotive engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad before retiring in 2016.
Stan was an avid sportsman and had a passion for hockey and baseball, but none would compare to his love of golf. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching and refereeing youth sports, and he served as the President of the board for the Classic Little League in Elgin.
Stanley was incredibly involved in the community, serving as a member of the Jaycee’s Club and the Exchange Club in his younger years. Stan went on to serve on the Fairways HOA Board of Directors, as well as being a proud member of the Lions Club in West Dundee where he served as treasurer for many years. He especially enjoyed selling Christmas Trees at Tower Park every year with the Lions as a way to give back to the community even more.
Stanley was a humble and kind gentleman, who enjoyed building relationships with his family and friends. He always had a welcoming smile and a quick sense of humor. He was a music enthusiast and was always curious to learn about something new and unfamiliar. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Stanley is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy Werner, his children, Stacy (George Wissel) Werner, and Grant (Janelle) Werner, his grandchildren, Tyler and Zoey, and his siblings, Keith (Lisa) Werner, and Terri (Ken) Mutzel.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 10 a.m. to time of memorial service 11 a.m. all at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church, 10805 Main Street, Huntley.
Inurnment to follow at the Shepherd of the Prairie Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Stan’s name can be made to the Lions Club of Illinois or to Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church.

We are so so sorry for your loss. We only knew Stan for 3 years having joined the Dundee Township Lions Club when we returned to the area but it became apparent after only a short time what a great man he was, Stan was a man of the people, entering the room with a huge smile on his face and a kind word for everyone he came into contact with. His financial skills were fabulous and he helped our Club through some difficult and trying times, sorting out the mess and putting the steps in place to ensure we would do the right thing in the long run. To meet and greet he was one heck of a guy, not your average finance guy, but one of the nicest men you could ever wish to meet. In the last year, we worked with Stan on the Legacy Lion program. Stan was an inspiration to the team and provided the big picture thinking for us, inspiring the naming of the program and typically, while many of us were looking backwards at the great Lions of the past, Stan was looking forward visualizing how we could build a model that would help document the Lions of today and make sure they would never be forgotten. Lion Stan, a big man, a great man, a man we shall never forget. RIP Stan - we celebrate your life and the legacy you left behind.

I was so sad to hear of Stan's passing. As a childhood best friend to Grant, Stan holds a fond place in many memories. Whether it was sneaking tools out of his shed for our fort making endeavors or dressing up in full catcher's outfits to play catch or to don his old goalie pads to play hockey in the basement hallway, I happily think of him. He will be missed - Robby

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I used to love seeing Stan and Wendy at church every Sunday and I will always carry the memory of coming over to help with your roses before winter.
