Donald Burns

Obituary

Donald Harry Burns, 97, of Huntley, died peacefully in his home on August 13, 2022, and was happily reunited with his beloved wife of 63 years, Ethel Burns.
Don was born in Racine, Wisconsin on June 3, 1925, to parents Harry and Esther (nee Brietzke) Burns. He spent his early years in Racine before enlisting in the United States Navy. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois where he met Ethel Ahlin Burns. The couple was married on May 23, 1953, and then settled in Des Plaines where they raised their family. Faith was very important to Don, and he proudly served as the Chairman of the Elders Board at Des Plaines Bible Church. In the early 2000’s Don and Ethel moved to Huntley. They loved to travel and together they toured all 50 states prior to her death in 2016. Don was very proud that his drivers license was renewed through his 99th birthday.
Don is survived by his children, Janice Burns, James (Nancy) Burns, and William (Sue) Burns, his grandchildren, Brian (Katie), Laura (Bradley), and Andrew (Nicole), his great-grandchildren, Levi, Sophia, Gabriel, Titus, Hudson and Lincoln, and his brother, Richard (Peggy) Burns.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ethel Burns, and his sister, Carol (Harold) Kelm.
A graveside service will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, date pending.

Dear Jan and family, I am sorry for the loss of your dad. From what I know of him, he was a remarkable man who lived a full life to his last day. I still laugh at the thought of him sinking his old computer in the pond to get rid of it safely and might have to do the same myself. I am praying for comfort for all of you during this difficult time. Love, Mary White

It was a pleasure to get to know Don over the years here at the Huntley branch. He was a wonderful man and always put a smile on our faces everytime he came in. He will be missed. Our condolences go out to the family.

For years and years Don was a member of our Bible Study Group on Friday mornings. Don's quiet demeanor and loyalty to attend meetings was as noticeable as his wide smile and his greeting each time we met. Heaven welcomes a wonderful man of dignity and we are left with remembrances of a kind role model of a man who loved his Savior. To God be the glory!!
