Michael “Mike” Zahn, 91, of Chicago, died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, September 23, 2022, in Winfield. He was born in Romania on February 12, 1931, to Michael Zahn and Rosalia (Nee Kramer) Zahn. On January 15, 1956, he married Elizabeth (nee Hirsh) Zahn. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Michael came to the United States when he was 47 years old. He worked for Littel for 18 years before re retired to enjoy the finer things in life. He was an avid gardener and would spend endless hours tending to his delicate flowers. Michael loved his grape vines, quince tree, and bountiful garden. You would never find him idle for very long because he loved to work and help with projects.
Michael is survived by his wife of 66 years, his daughters, Theresia (Johann) Massong and Elizabeth (Anthony) Sapienza. His five adoring granddaughters, Herta (Jonathan) Eilers, Anita (Matthew) Adam, Bettina Sapienza, Tiana (Nicolas) Dalin, and Vanessa (Zachary) Hommowun. Michael also leaves behind six great grandchildren, Stephen and Kaitlyn Eilers, Kristen and Natalie Adam, Jaxon, and Zoey Dalin, along with may nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosalia Oltean, Jakob (Magdalena) Zahn, and Anna (Hans) Falker, along with his brother-in-law, Anton Hirsch.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, from 4-7pm at DeFiore Funeral Home-10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, 2pm at St. Mary Catholic Church-10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Burial will be in Huntley Cemetery.
