Richard W. Vaughn,88, formerly of Huntley, died, February 3, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Richard was born March 10, 1934 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the son of William and Viola Vaughn. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On June 8, 1957, he married Elizabeth Buchner. He worked for Centel Telephone Co. until his retirement. He enjoyed painting watercolors and wood working. Dick was a member of the Art Club, Fishing Club and was a former Knight of Columbus. He later became the handy man of the Sun City neighborhoods. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his children, Marie (Ronald) Staffa, Donna Squires, Daniel (Barbara) Vaughn, and Michael (Esmerelda) Vaughn. By his sisters, Nancy (David) Ingram, Carol Johnson, by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley.
Visitation will be held on Thursday , February 9, 2023 from 9-10am with a Mass being celebrated at 10:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church-10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Dick was my very first friend over 80 years ago in our Goose town neighborhood in La Crosse. We played "army" in the marshes, fished the Black River from the boat house just north of Riverside Park, traded comic books, saw lots of movies together and played in our alley until the street lights came on. Even as a six or seven year-old, he was gentleman. I never heard him use bad language, tell a lie, or take something that wasn't his. He was kind and generous and capable. One does not forget a first friend, and especially one who was such a fine human being. We would be so much better off if there were more Dicky Vaughns. Dear Liz: I am so sorry for your sorrow. Dick was a strong talented person and had so many accomplishments. It still makes me smile when I think of him being my trusted assistant in preparing and serving the coffee for our morning organ group. I had so much fun teasing him about "getting it ready. Please know that my prayers are with you. I believe God has welcomed him and his many skills and will put him to good use Maybe he will make him the chief offee maker in Heaven's music department. I can remember the first time Dick came over to our new house to show Don, my husband, the ropes! They got along great. Dick was a man you always wanted to be around.
