Joseph Readus

Obituary

In Loving Memory of Joseph Readus,
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; and a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Joseph Readus, a remarkable man whose life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. Joseph was born in Huntsville, Alabama on December 13, 1930, to parents Gladys and Felix Readus. He peacefully departed on July 31, 2023, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories, and a significant impact on all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
Joseph's life was one of significant love and commitment. His family moved to Chicago when he was four years old, where he met the love of his life, Gloria Wilson. Joseph and Gloria celebrated an extraordinary marriage filled with joy, mutual support, and unwavering devotion. Their love was blessed with the arrival of two precious children, Kenneth and Yvette, whom Joseph cherished dearly.
A man of valor, Joseph served his country with distinction during the Korean War, earning accolades for his exemplary service and bravery. His dedication to duty and selflessness were an inspiration to all who served alongside him.
Following his military service, Joseph embarked on a career at the post office, where he dedicated almost 42 years of his life. During his tenure, he received numerous citations and awards for exemplary service and performance. His strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Joseph's faith was an essential pillar of his life. As a devout member of Coppin A.M.E Church, he found solace, community, and spiritual fulfillment. His unwavering devotion to his church led him to serve as a trustee, where he generously contributed his time and wisdom to the enrichment of the congregation. Throughout his years at Coppin A.M.E Church, Joseph served on the usher board and became the first vice president of this assembly. Joseph met his wife, Gloria at Coppin A.M.E Church. As a result of this union, Joseph and Gloria shared sixty-three incredibly blessed years of marriage in the service of the lord.
Outside of his professional and religious endeavors, Joseph was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He took immense pride in his role as "Grandpa Joe" to Joshua, Melia, KJ and Carrie. He nurtured and guided them with love, imparting values that will shape their lives for generations to come.
Joseph will forever be remembered for his warm smile, his gentle demeanor, and the genuine kindness he bestowed upon everyone he met. He had an uncanny ability to make those around him feel valued and loved. His wisdom and compassion were a source of comfort to many.
