I am so saddened to hear this news. I feel truly blessed that Mr. Haraburda (when I subbed at Jacobs he told me to call him Dave, but how can that happen when I have always had so much respect for him?) taught me biology all those many years ago. We were truly fortunate at Jacobs to have such excellent science instruction tempered with people of faith. That balance eludes many, but I never felt I had to sacrifice my faith in God to pursue my love of science. To this day, I continue to appreciate the lessons I learned from him. I use the example of his teaching as I instruct my own students. I remember one particular instance when I was swamped but needed to come up with a project for my senior year science project. Mr. Haraburda stepped in and helped me with the inspiration that allowed me to win a top prize at Regionals. While I completely value the education I received, even more he taught me what it meant to put students first. My love to your whole family. Janell Zange Wright

I was truly blessed to share several years with Dave as a teaching colleague dating back to the opening of Jacobs High School. I will always remember the consistent admiration and respect throughout the entire Jacobs community for Dave centered around his passion for and the special gift he possessed as a professional educator. Dave was always grounded in each individual student being the number one priority, and he was a role model of excellence through his Science Team leadership. My thoughts and prayers are with the Haraburda family during this difficult time. Glenn Schwartzwalder

Nettie and Anna: My thoughts and prayers are with you! Dave was such an important part of Jacob's High School science department. He took care of us all until he retired in 2002. He continued to visit us and would always bring us donuts! Just like he did for every science department meeting. He was an excellent teacher and had many students that continued their studies in science after taking his Advanced Placement Biology Class. It was a pleasure to go down to U of I every year with about 20 honors freshmen biology students who had qualified for the state science fair. He will be remembered fondly!

Dave was a man of honesty and integrity. He walked the talk. He was truly interested in and cared about others. He loved and adored Nettie and his children—supported them and stood beside them. He was a devoted grandfather to our grandchildren. He was a man of deep faith and constant commitment to doing what was right. For all these and other reasons, he made a difference in our world and we will miss him. We are proud and grateful to have had him as part of our family.

Mr. Haraburda was one of the most influential teachers in my entire life. I was fortunate to have him as my high school biology teacher at Jacobs High School. His enthusiasm for science was contagious! He was always sharing new information, and encouraging every student he encountered. He was kind, intelligent and compassionate. He helped to give me the confidence to pursue a career in nursing, and encouraged me to go to medical school. In fact, I did both, thanks to Mr. Haraburda. I saw him at the hospital in McHenry years later, and told him that I had become a physician, largely because of his encouragement. Thank you Mr. Haraburda. Thank you so much. Sincerely, an unforgettable, positive and inspiring man. Susan {Kristensen} Howey. HD Jacobs, Class of 1981

I was just reminiscing with a friend about favorite teachers in high school and Dr Haraburda was the first name out of my mouth. I didn’t go into science but he fueled a life long passion and curiosity about science and medicine. I can’t tell you how often in the last 30 years I’ve thought of him. He was an excellent teacher, and a sweet human being. Sending prayers for peace to his entire family.
