John Goebel

Obituary

John W. Goebel II, 75, of Huntley, died on Monday, September 11, 2023, in Elgin, Illinois.
John was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 4, 1948, to parents John and Mary (nee Storm) Goebel.
John attended elementary school in Lakeland, Ohio, and in his later school years he attended Culver Military Academy and St. Andrew's Preparatory School. He went to college at Florida State University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree.
John married Catherine “Katie” McIntyre on November 3, 1984, and together they raised their two children.
Outside of his work in hotel development and hospitality, he had a passion for woodworking, and when he wasn’t building something in his garage, he was building relationships with those that he cared about, and those of us that cared for him.
John will be remembered as a caring, empathetic, and thoughtful man. He was always curious and lived to learn more about the world around him, and the people in it. He was an incredible storyteller and could rarely get to the end of one of his stories without letting out one of his iconic, infectious belly laughs.

To say that his time on this earth was too short would be an understatement - no amount of time really seems long enough. The world is a little less warm and bright without him in it, and not a single day will pass where he is not missed.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Katie Goebel, his children, John “Jay” (Samantha Goldstein) Goebel III, and Anne (Trent) Rhinerson, his grandson, Bennett, his sisters, Nancy Auck, and Barbara Kiss, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Marilyn (John) Sommers.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday October 7, 2023, at the Sun City Del Webb Community Room, located at 12880 Del Webb Blvd, Huntley, IL 60142.

Although we never spent time together, I will remember John (or "Johnny" as he always was to us, his first cousins) for his empathy and interest. I last talked to him after the death of my mother, his aunt Evelyn, beloved sister of his mother Mary Storm Goebels. We enjoyed reminiscing and I had hoped to see him in person some day. Alas that didn't happen. But we have some good memories.

Mr. Goebel raised one of my very best friends and I am so grateful for his parenting and guidance. His laughter and kindness put me at ease. I will always remember how much love he had for his wife and children. Say hi to my Dad for me.

John and I go back many, many years in the real estate development business. We went our separate ways years ago, but stayed in touch several times a year via phone calls. He was a true pro but most importantly a good friend. Every call we had, had some kind of light moment that resulted in a good laugh. His passing caught my by total surprise. I will miss our conversations. RIP my friend. You truely will be missed.

He was certainly a part of making history in the creation of a new hotel brand that has been the leader in its category for 40 years. It’s sad he didn’t have the opportunity to attend the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Courtyard at Marriott’s new worldwide headquarters in a couple of weeks. We’ll certainly be thinking of John and you and your entire family.

I met John through a professional networking group some years ago. His experience and perspective were always welcomed and he was generous with his time and insight. He had a wonderful sense of humor and the amazing ability to put everyone at ease. He was a very special person! My sincerest condolences to his family.

I only worked with your dad for a very short time in his later years, but I really enjoyed him. He was very kind to me.
