Obituary

Donald Orville Meyer, 84, passed away July 21, 2013 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin after a brief illness.

He was born September 6, 1928 in Peoria, Illinois, to Orville Edward and Nora Mae Meyer. Don was the middle of three brothers (Robert W. and Richard A.)and one younger sister (Patricia A.) The family moved to Washington, Illinois, where they lived for many years. Don attended Washington Community High School and went on to Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois. In 1948 he wed Ruth M. Archer in Washington,Illinois. Do served in the US Naval Reserve and was a Mason in the Mohammed Shrine Temple in Peoria, Illinois. A lifelong drummer, he was the lead drummer in the Kiltie Bagpipe Band of the Mohammed Temple. He was employed by the Equitable Life Assurance Society. He transferred to the Chicago area in 1966 as an executive with Poulson Insurance Company. Residing in Elk Grove Village, he and his family became members of the Prince of Peace United Methodist Church in which he was an active member throughout the years, serving in many roles and developed many close and lasting friendships. In 1973 he established Don Meyer Insurance Services, affiliating with a number of well known insurance companies to provide a wide line of insurance products. His son, Kent, joined him in this venture in 1976. His daughter, Kathi, joined him in the agency in 1988. He was associated with the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village for over 30 years, serving on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Councilors. Don was devoted to his immediate and extended family and loved to travel with his family and close friends. He was also and avid golfer and fisherman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruth M. Meyer of Huntley; cherished children Karen (Ted) Huiatt of Ames, Iowa; Kathi (Larry) Clinton of Wayne; Kent (Linda) Meyer of Orlando, Florida and Kris (Torrey) Fiorovante of Crystal Lake; grandchildren Courtney (Jeremy) Cswercko, Travis (Erin) Huiatt, John Meyer, Chris Meyer, Brianne Delisi, Phillip Fiorovante, Evan Delisi, Lauren Delisi, Sophie Fiorovante and Faith Fiorovante; great-grandchildren Seth Cswercko and Monte Huiatt; his brother Richard (Josephine) Meyer; sister-in-law Kay (Bob) Meyer; and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church, 1400 S. Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village, Illinois on Friday, July 26, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's memory are requested to the Prince of Peace United Methodist Church General Fund.
