Richard E. Meyers, 92, of Huntley, died peacefully on February 13, 2024, in Huntley.
Richard was born in Chicago on October 29, 1931, and raised by parents Fred and Vera (Viehweg) Meyers. Richard was a tremendous friend and maintained grade school and high school friendships throughout his life, and they often met up to play cards and reminisce. He was very active and enjoyed being in the water. He was on the swim team and was a lifeguard on Lake Michigan during high school. He also enjoyed bowling and golfing. He loved music and dancing and met Kathleen Galusha Swedo while attending a country music concert hall. The couple fell in love and were married on May 14, 1983, celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary last year. Richard was a strong and resilient man, dedicated to taking care of his loved ones. He held many titles, husband, father, grandfather, papa, great-grandfather, and friend to name a few. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 41 years, Kathleen Meyers, his sons, Richard M. (Susan) Meyers, Don (Christine) Meyers, and John J. (Gabrielle) Meyers, Kathleen’s children, Colleen Scott, Michelle (Rick) Chitwood, and Thomas (Jackie) Swedo, his cuddly lap dog Princess, 18 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way, his sister, Donna Rae Whitlock, his niece Jenny Duffy, his nephew, Jim Whitlock, and his first wife, Elaine Meyers.
He was preceded in death by Kathleen's son, Brian Swedo.
Visitation will be Monday, February 19, 2024, from 1 p.m. to time of prayers 2 :45 p.m. all at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley.
Following the service, inurnment will take place at Huntley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard’s name can be made to JourneyCare Hospice https://journeycare.org, Catholic Charities https://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org or Huntley Fire Department.
