Michael “Mike” Thomas Gannon I, 87, of Union, formerly of Chicago, died peacefully, surrounded by his children, on April 22, 2024, at Rush University Hospital in Chicago .
Mike was born in Chicago on November 7, 1936, to parents Patrick and Mary (nee Connolly) Gannon. He was a dedicated father and worked hard to provide for his family as a maintenance engineer for Wonder Bread bakery, farming and apartment maintenance. Mike enjoyed the outdoors and could often be found in his garden, planting trees or caring for his pets. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was a very kind and generous man. Mike was always willing to lend a helping hand and cared for anyone in need. Mike was especially proud of and devoted to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
Mike is survived by his children, Rosemary (Bruce) Smolinski, Tammy (Jim) Lodge, Bart (Suzanne) Gannon, and Nicole Gajewski, their mother, Sadie Gannon, his sister Nora Keller, son-in-law, Jeff Gajewski, his grandchildren, Erica (Kevin) Francen, Justin (Amanda) Smolinski, Ryan (Kim) Smolinski, Nicholas (Janelle) Lodge, Kelly (Patrick) Kelly, Samuel Gannon, Benjamin Gannon, Vincent Gannon, Olivia Lodge, Michael Gannon III, Grace Gajewski, and Cecilia Gajewski, his great-grandchildren, Henry, Wade, Charlotte, Westin, Laila, Camden, Jaedyn, Paetyn and Jack Michael.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gannon II, and his siblings, Patrick (Faith) Gannon, and Mary Bullistron.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 6 p.m. to time of prayers 8 p.m. all at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley.
Mass will be Monday, April 29, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.
Burial to follow mass at Huntley Cemetery.

This is so sad… Mike always made the best of any situation. Taught me the “can do”, and don’t give up regardless of it. Always will think of him with a smile because that is how he made me think in awkward scenarios. Without him life would have been not as memorable.
I never met Michael, but enjoy the friendship of his family members. My deepest sympathies to all. Rejoice in the love felt by every one in this lovely family.

Mike was a sweet, funny and loving man. He will be sorely missed by so many. May God God him in the palm of His hands.
