Laverne “Harke” Rieke, 73, of Marengo, died July 7, 2024.
Laverne was born August 25, 1950 in Elgin, Illinois the son of Raymond and Bessie Rieke. He grew up and worked closely with his father on the family farm. Farming and hard work were just part of who Harke was. He loved agriculture and his pride and joy was his John Deere Tractor. Later he worked for the Strathmore farm in Barrington Hills. Northern Prairie Farms in Woodstock and Des Plaines Sod, before ending at Stade Grain where he worked hauling grain for local farmers, from the mid to late nineties until retiring in December 2010. Making tons of new friends along the way.
McHenry County Antique Farm Equipment Association of Illinois. And he was also a member of the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club.
He is survived by his son, Brian (Trisha) Rieke and by his sister, Judith Howard and nephew, Mark Stockly. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Betty, and William.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 2-5pm with a service at 4:30pm all at DeFiore Funeral Home-10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the McHenry County Four H Association.

Harke was not only one of our closest friends, but had become more like a member of our Family. He was kind beyond words and willing to help with any project or adventure that came along. He will be so very missed by all of us. Attending the annual Steam Show will never be the same! Our thoughts and prayers are with Harke’s Family at this time of loss.
