Patricia Winesburg

Obituary

Patricia Hoerich Winesburg, of South Elgin, died peacefully August 12, 2024. Patricia was born in Chicago on October 10, 1934, to George and Irene Hogan. Patricia grew up with a younger sister and brother, plus a large extended family. With just a quick stroll down the sidewalk, “Patsy” was sure to encounter some of her many uncles, aunts, and cousins.
When Patricia was 12 years old, her family relocated to Antioch, Illinois. Pat attended Antioch High School where she served on the Yearbook Committee, the Pep Club, and Future Homemakers of America. She was the Student Council Secretary, performed in the class plays, and was also Homecoming Queen.
After graduating from high school, Pat began commuting to Chicago for her job at the U.S. Steel Company. She trained to be a keypunch operator, learning to enter data into computer systems. It was there that she met Bill Hoerich. They began to date and fell in love. Pat and Bill married in 1955 and settled in Forest Park, Illinois. They started a family the following year with their daughter, Laura, followed by their son, Mark, and then their daughter, Leslie. They had returned to Antioch to be close to family but eventually dreams of a new, larger home led them to Hanover Park. Pat loved being a homemaker. She enjoyed decorating, baking, gardening, and being on the PTA. Then tragedy struck the happy family when Bill died of cancer unexpectedly in 1969.
Now raising her family as a single mom, Pat took a position as a school secretary for Schaumburg School District to allow her to be home in the summer. As her children grew older, Pat took a job in sales at Flexonics in Bartlett. It was there that she met her future husband, Ray Winesburg. They married in 1975 and blended their two families, a total of six teenagers. After raising their family, Pat and Ray enjoyed travelling all over the United States, taking many cruises, and three extensive tours of Europe.
Pat’s career in sales offered her a variety of opportunities, including working for Custom Aluminum and Century 21 in South Elgin and Northwind Flooring in West Dundee. When it was time to retire, she discovered many new interests. One of those was joining the Women’s Auxiliary and volunteering weekly at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She served on their board for ten years, organized fundraisers, and held the position of President of the Auxiliary for three years. Pat enjoyed the feeling of contributing to the community and made some wonderful friends along the way.
As Pat and Ray both began to experience declining health, she moved to an assisted living facility and Ray moved in with his son in Georgia. Ray passed away shortly after. Pat settled into a comfortable period of contentment with her health concerns addressed and few responsibilities to manage. In her final years, she enjoyed Bingo, crossword puzzles, crochet projects, and following politics.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Bill and Ray, her siblings Marcia Woods and George Hogan, and great granddaughter Lorelai Winesburg. She is survived by her children Laura (Thomas) Helsper, Mark (Marcia) Hoerich, Leslie (Ismael) Delgado, Steve Winesburg, Jeff (Paula) Winesburg, and Ray (Donna) Winesburg. Patricia also is survived by her beloved grandchildren Neil (Caili) Helsper, Eric (Lauren) Helsper, Allison (Jeremy) Hanes, Andrea (Kameron) Kusch, Jennifer (Hayden) Greene, Season Winesburg, Lindsey (Stephen) Cochran, Luc (Katherine) Winesburg, Carly Winesburg, and Steven Winesburg, and her precious great grandchildren Winnie, Etta, and Primrose Helsper, Kingston and Cleopatra Kusch, Penn and Mara Helsper, Gryffin and Miller Cochran, and Evan Marunde.
Visitation will be held August 23, 2024, at St. Thomas More Church-215 Thomas More Drive in Elgin at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral mass following at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
