Kabir Joseph Lawal

Obituary

Kabir Joseph Lawal, affectionately known as “KJ,” passed away at 24, just shy of his 25th birthday. His sudden departure has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Born November 3, 1999, KJ embodied kindness and responsibility in every aspect of his life, leaving a legacy of love and compassion.

KJ was loved and expressed love unconditionally. Whether offering a helping hand or simply listening, his sincerity lay evident in the way he was there and will forever be felt in his absence. He possessed everything that he aspired to be—creativity, compassion, thoughtfulness, and a kind of care that made others feel seen and heard.

He graduated from Hofstra University, where he earned a BS in economics along with an MBA. Among his many passions, KJ has always enjoyed playing tennis. He often practiced whenever he could—we will always cherish the memory of attending the US Open together. He loved every aspect of music: listening, singing, and playing. From a young age, KJ embraced singing as a means of expression.

In his free time, he also learned to play the guitar, violin, and piano. His creativity ran deep—and was signified in his advocacy for not only himself but others. Along with being an avid reader, his writings offered another avenue of expression.

He is survived by his loving sibling, Carrie Lawal, and his devoted parents, Yvette and Kabir Lawal, who will forever cherish his memory. KJ’s family and friends take solace in the incredible person he was and are grateful for the time they shared with him.

His impact on those around him will last forever. KJ will always be remembered for everything that he was—a beautiful spirit and best friend who shared his love so freely.

So saddened by the sudden loss of KJ. He was such an accomplished musician and I met the Lawal family when I was a member of St. John AME. There are no words to express what I feel at this moment. However, I pray that God will heal our hearts and eventually we will focus on the sweeter memories of his music and all the wonderful things he accomplished in life. Continuing to keep his family and loved ones in my prayers.

Dearest Yvette, Femi and Carrie, and grandma Readus, we are so sorry for this unexpected and painful loss. We still remember the children’s visits and KJ sleeping on the couch and being picky about his food. We remember the July birthday picnics for all the kids born in July. May the Lord sustain and comfort all of you, and wrap his loving arms around you. We are so grateful for our hope of the resurrection. May KJ’s soul rest in perfect peace. He will be missed.
