Reinhold (Ron) Mertinat, aged 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Huntley, Illinois on December 19, 2024. Born in June 1936 in Tilsit, Germany. He was the son of the late Kurt and Erna Mertinat. Ron was preceded in death by his son Kurt, sister Gisela, brother Gerhard, father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Vivian McGuin, sister-in-law Madeleine Barone, and brother-in-law Robert Perreault. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Joan Mertinat (McGuin), his children Jeanne (Jim) Rauscher and Kevin (Lisa) Mertinat. He was “Opa” to his grandchildren Erika, Alissa (Phil), Adam, Olivia, Kylie, and his great-grandchildren Maverik, Konrad, and Dawson.
Ron immigrated to the United States in 1956 and joined the US Army shortly after. He met his wife Joan, while working together at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. Joan and her family helped Ron to further assimilate into the United States. They married in 1960. Ron worked as an electrician for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for 25+ years, retiring in 1998. During that time, Ron never missed a day of work. After his retirement, Ron dedicated his life to his family, spending as much time with them as possible. He and Joan never did anything without each other. They took walks together daily and loved going out to eat regularly. He was always quick to tell everyone that he had the greatest wife ever. In his later years, being with his grandchildren and his great grandchildren were his greatest joy. He always looked forward to the “Wednesday Breakfast Club” with Joan, his daughter, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Ron will be remembered for his kindness, his loving smile, and his humor.
