Anthony Francis Pollastrini

Obituary

Anthony Francis Pollastrini, 91, of Huntley, IL, died peacefully on March 14, 2025. Anthony (Tony) was born on September 19,1933 in Lucca, Italy, the son of Giovanni and Gemma Pollastrini. Tony emigrated to the United States along with his parents and sister Pearl in 1937 escaping unrest in Italy and Europe. His younger twin siblings, Albert and Joanne, were born a few years later as the family made a life living in Chicago.
Tony graduated from St. Mel High School in Chicago in 1951 and began attending Loyola University interested in becoming a doctor. His father unexpectedly died that same year requiring Tony to leave college to work and support his mother and younger siblings. He met the love of his life, Tomasina Zenzola, at the “Young Peoples Club” at Our Lady of the Angels church, and would eventually marry on October 12,1957 as Tony was still serving in the U.S. Army. Both Tony and Tomasina were committed Catholics that dedicated their lives to raising a large family that would contribute positively to the world. His continuous effort and determination to support his young family were a great blessing.
Tony, lovingly known by his children as the “Honch,” along with his younger brother Al, operated a lifelong grocery and deli business under the names, Tony’s Finer Foods, Mama’s Deli, and Al and Tony’s Deli. Many will miss his legendary gourmet Italian cooking skills. His entrepreneurial talent, along with his abilities to create, fix, and build almost anything, have been instilled in his children and grandchildren.
Tony was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Tomasina, sister Pearl Giovannoni, and grandson Nicholas Pollastrini. He is survived by his eight children, John Pollastrini, Anthony (Sheila) Pollastrini, Christopher (Laurie) Pollastrini, Lawrence (Janet) Pollastrini, Vincent Pollastrini, Geriann (Alex) Gatziolis, Ronald Pollastrini, Michael (Barbara) Pollastrini, his 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, brother Albert (Christine) Pollastrini, sister Joanne Timm and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Anthony was a committed and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend who will be missed by many. Visitation will be on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 4-7pm at DeFiore Funeral Home – 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday March 22, 2025, at 10am at Saint Mary Catholic Church with visitation from 9-10am at Churc– 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Very sorry for your loss. My Uncle Tony was a wonderful Uncle! Back in the day I enjoyed working at the Deli on Saturdays when he was there because of the great conversations, the stories he shared with me and because he always made a big sandwich of my choice for lunch 🥰. You will be missed but happy you are reunited with Auntie Tommy! God bless
