Obituary

Michael A. Lessner, 75, of Union, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, held in the hearts of those who loved him.

He was born on April 8, 1950, in Elmhurst, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Dorothy (Boydston) Lessner. Mike worked as a supervisor for the Airline industry until his retirement. He was known for his quick wit, incredible storytelling, love of people, and vibrant personality.

Mike enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping—though he preferred "glamping"—and riding his motorcycle. A devoted Chicago Bears fan through thick and thin, Mike was also the kind of dad whose legendary dad jokes brought laughter (and eye-rolls) to every gathering. He enjoyed coaching his sons from Little League through High School and proudly served as a volunteer Firefighter for Carpentersville for half a decade during the 1980s.
He had a remarkable knack for fixing just about anything, often by walking his family through the steps with his trademark mix of determination, know-how, and love. But above all, Mike found his greatest joy in being with his children and grandchildren. Whether sharing a story, a joke, or simply his time, he gave them his whole heart—and they’ll carry that love with them always.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa; his sons, Keith (Courtney) Lessner and Kevin Lessner; and his cherished grandchildren, Devin, Mia, Alissa, Kaiah, and Kaylah. He is also survived by his in-laws, Rosendo and Fidelia Avila. Mike was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.

I knew Mike from when he handled our airplanes at MDW. Us Porter Airlines pilots always knew when we saw Mike bringing our airplane in, it was going to be stress free, efficient and entertaining. It hasn’t been the same since he retired (didn’t he retire twice lol? ). It’s sad to see he left this world so young. My condolences to his family.

I remember working on his very last day he retired coming into MDW. Got to shake his hand and thank him for his service and wish him well on his retirement. Hard working, consistent, proud and fun professional attitude. Always felt safe and in good hands when I saw him at the Jet bridge. Stellar man. Sending much love, thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. May he Rest in Peace.

Im sure I can speak for all the Porter Crews when I say it was an immense honour and privilege in getting to know Mike. Truly a remarkable Person, dependable and Hard Working, His humour and wit brightened every single trip that I made in and out of Midway. As a Captain, It would bring immense relief in knowing that Mike would be handling our flight, especially on those bad weather days. I was saddened by His initial retirement but now heartbroken by this loss. For Mike’s Family and Friends, please accept my Deepest Heartfelt Condolences, and know how much of a Blessing it was for All of us to work along side with Him. I will always remember Mike.
