Edward J. Mosteig, Jr.

Obituary

Edward J. Mosteig Jr., 84, of Sun City Huntley, passed away peacefully on July 1 2025, with his wife, Diane E. (Coolahan) Mosteig, and their son, Edward C. Mosteig, at his side.

Born on September 21 1940, at Hard Maternity Hospital in Mt. Ephraim, New Jersey, Ed was the eldest child of Edward Joseph Mosteig Sr. and Grace Elizabeth (Bernhardt) Mosteig. He spent his childhood working in the family bakery, famed for its rye bread, wedding cakes, and a storefront stocked with freshly baked treats.

In 1962 Ed answered his country’s call, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Over four years and nine months he rose to Airman First Class, keeping the F-106 Delta Dart interceptor flight-ready. His decorations include the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

After his honorable discharge in 1967, Ed met and married Diane E. (Coolahan) Mosteig, a devoted nurse, in 1968. Together they raised their son, Edward—now a mathematics professor at Loyola Marymount University—and Ed went on to build an engineering career with Burroughs, Unisys, Oracle, and later as an independent consultant.

Retirement brought the couple to Sun City Huntley in 2017, where Ed poured his precision into pyrography (wood-burning art). He taught the craft at the Del Webb clubhouse and exhibited wildlife scenes at the Huntley Public Library and the Captain James A. Lovell FHCC Veterans Art Show.

Service to others remained Ed’s passion: he delivered meals for Meals on Wheels, assisted seniors through the Barrington Area Council on Aging, shelved books at the Barrington Public Library, volunteered with the U.S. Census Bureau, and still found time to mentor fellow wood-burners.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12 2025, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at DeFiore Funeral & Cremation Service, Huntley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Path to Hope.
