Kevin F. Hurley

Obituary

Kevin F. Hurley, 73, of Elgin, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on December 11th, 2025. Born on December 3, 1952, in Oak Park, Illinois, Kevin lived a life remembered for laughter, loyalty, and an extraordinary ability to turn friends into family.
Kevin was the beloved husband of 49 years to his high school sweetheart, Mary Lynne Hurley (Bond). All who knew Kevin also knew that it took someone extraordinary to be married to him for all these years — Mary Lynne has been exactly that. She has loved him through every up and down with patience, strength, and grace, and Kevin loved her just as deeply in return.
He was a father and best friend to Ryan Hurley (Tonya Volk) and Meaghan Schmidt (Matthew). A favorite of their friends growing up, his sage parenting in the formative years involved daily directions such as: “Let them know the Hurleys were there.” “Don’t take any crap.” “Kill ‘em with Kindness.” “If you can’t hang with the Big Dogs, stay on the porch.” The most valuable was, “Just do as I say, not as I do.” A proud Papa to Joslyn Hurley, Eyla Hurley, and Rooney Schmidt, his daily conversations with his children, children-in-law, and grandchildren were a highlight of his day, and each of them knew without question they were loved by him.
Family meant everything to Kevin. One of ten siblings, he loved each of them deeply and was affectionately known as “Nev.” Summers spent at Lake Geneva in their youth helped forge lifelong bonds with siblings and cousins. While Kevin was often the source of fun and mischief, he was unwavering in his support during the more difficult moments life brought.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Hurley, M.D. and Margaret Ann Hurley (Keane); siblings Matthew Hurley and Peggy Rich; father-in-law Stewart Bond D.D.S., mother-in-law Mary Bond (Aniballi), brother-in-law Dennis L. Bond, D.D.S.; and sisters-in-law Sally Bond, Krystine Bond, and Mary Mahoney. Kevin is survived by many who loved him deeply, including siblings Brian Hurley (Lynn Mitchell), Maureen Corcoran (Steve Christian), Megan Guzeman, Christopher Hurley, M.D. (Arnold Riddle), Molly Nepil (Mark), Tim Hurley (Kathleen), Keri Personette (Dave), his special stepmother and friend, Suz Hurley; brothers-in-law Charley Rich, Keith Lustig, Stewart Bond (Vickie), David Bond (Linda); as well as many nieces and nephews who adored him—and somehow believed he spent time as a starting forward for the Belvidere Moon Monsters, a NBA development team, in his youth.
He also leaves behind friends who were, in every way that mattered, family. Kevin shared a truly legendary bond with Jim Donahugh, Tim Gallagher, Dale Pray, Frank Murnane, and the late Michael Colligan, M.D. —friendships marked by decades of laughter, shenanigans, bad golf, and loyalty that defined what it meant to show up for one another.
Kevin proudly served in the United States Army and later worked alongside friends and family for more than 30 years at Madden Communications where he became a partner and an appreciated United Airlines frequent flyer.
Kevin loved the University of Notre Dame, golf, and spirited conversation. He was a natural storyteller, a consummate host, and the person you wanted nearby at any gathering. Kevin treated everyone with the same respect and warmth. He had an unmatched ability to make people laugh, feel included, and leave a little lighter than when they arrived. He loved easily and was easy to love, but he always rooted hardest for the underdogs in life.
Despite a long and complicated health history that used up most of his nine lives, the suspected cause of death was heartbreak from the recent injustice inflicted upon Notre Dame by the College Football Playoff Committee. He would also want it formally noted that among his many accomplishments, he was a seven-time M.O.E. (Men of Excellence) Champion at Elgin Country Club, a title made even sweeter by the fact that he thoroughly and repeatedly pounded Dale Pray at golf. Kevin felt this was important for historical context.
Kevin disliked wakes, funerals, and most politicians, but he loved parties, friends, and family. In keeping with that, a Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date, where stories will be shared, laughter will be loud, and Kevin’s spirit will be exactly where it always was—at the center of the room.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you tip a server well this holiday season, or better yet, at your next gathering, find the person who feels out of place and make them feel welcome. Kevin did that instinctively, and it remains a lasting part of his legacy.
