Norma Lynn Karsten, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026.
Norma was born on September 30, 1940, in Elgin, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel and Leona (Beyer) Landis. She married Ronald Karstens, and together they proudly owned and operated Karstens Gas Station in Marengo—a family business that continues to be run today by her loved ones.
Norma was kind, caring, and known for her generous heart. She was deeply involved in her church, St. John Lutheran Church, where she faithfully participated in Bible studies. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life and guided everything she did. An amazing baker, Norma was especially famous for her chocolate chip cookies, which will be fondly remembered by all who enjoyed them.
Though small in stature, Norma was mighty in spirit. She was never afraid to speak her mind, lovingly calling others out and encouraging them to be their best selves. She maintained lifelong friendships, some dating back to kindergarten—a testament to her loyalty and warmth. Above all, Norma’s greatest pride and joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Norma is survived by her children: Christine Mavis; Carla (William) Weiss; Timothy (Penny) Karsten; Thomas (Dana Lee) Karsten; Patricia (John) Griebel; and Pamela (Todd) Alexander; by her 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and by her sister, Gayle Landis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Leona Landis; her beloved husband, Ronald Karsten; and her brother, David Landis.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a funeral service at 4:00 p.m., followed by a dinner. All services will take place at St. John Lutheran Church - 6821 Main Street, Union Il 60180
