Beatrice “Joy” McLaughlin, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away in 2026 at the age of 91.
Joy was the loving daughter of Marjorie and Archibald Hastings. One of thirteen children, she grew up in rural Palatine, where she developed a deep love for animals and a lifelong devotion to family. From a young age, kittens, chickens, and rabbits often found a place in her caring arms. That compassionate spirit remained with her throughout her life and was reflected in the many pets she welcomed into her home over the years, including dogs, pigs, llamas, and birds.
A lifelong dream of living on a farm became a reality when Joy retired at age 65. While she cherished country living, her greatest joy was always her family. She was the proud mother of five children, Greg (Sharon) Wicklas, Holly Wicklas, Jill (Fred) Kruger, Julie (John) Dooley and Brad (Tamara) Wicklas. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
Joy was exceptionally talented with her hands. She created beautiful knitted sweaters for her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and was equally skilled at sewing. Her grandchildren fondly remember the robes, pajamas, and dresses she lovingly made for them. Her quilts, many of which were true works of art, remain treasured family keepsakes.
Throughout her adult life, Joy worked in the restaurant industry, where she developed a passion for cooking and entertaining. Family gatherings were made special by the delicious dishes she prepared and shared. She was also a resourceful homemaker who enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables, tending a large garden, and spending time outdoors.
Joy loved fishing with her husband, Dave, and enjoyed traveling both near and far. Her adventures took her to Hong Kong, Europe, Great Britain, Africa and many destinations throughout the United States.
Music was another important part of Joy’s life. As a student, she played trumpet in her high school marching band. Later, she sang in the Sweet Adeline’s choir, winning a National competition. While her Dad was an organ player for silent films, her Mom was a concert pianist. Both inspired her desire to play the organ, continuing to do so for much of her adult life. Music was always present in her home.
Joy also had a gift for bringing people together. She loved hosting gatherings and creating opportunities for family and friends to connect, laugh, and make lasting memories.
Joy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know and love her. Her legacy of kindness, creativity, generosity, and devotion to family will live on in the many lives she touched.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 21, 2026 from 4-7pm at DeFiore Funeral Home-10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. A second visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 10am at The Congregational Church of Algonquin,109 Washington Street, Algonquin, followed by a Funeral Service immediately following at 11am.

What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. I feel so lucky and blessed that sister, Joy was a part of our family. She will be sorely missed.
