Robert Leonard Murphy of Huntley, Illinois, passed peacefully on September 24th, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Elgin on May 3rd, 1938, to Leonard and Frances (Jones) Murphy. He grew up in Elgin, graduating from Elgin High School in 1956, and later attending the University of Illinois. His love for the Fighting Illini continued throughout his life.
On January 20, 1962, Bob married the love of his life, Karen Carlson, at St. Mary’s Church (Elgin). Together, they built a loving family and raised their children in Elgin. Bob enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with Burgess Norton Manufacturing, where he worked for 25 years and retired as Plant Manager. He was a member of the Illinois National Guard (1960-1966), and an active and valued member of his community, spending his time with the Sun City Celtic Club and multiple other groups and activities in the Sun City Community.
Bob was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and devoted Chicago Bears fan, which created no shortage of pain in his life. Bob took immense pride in his Irish heritage, and enjoyed all things Irish. Further, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, golfing and bowling with his buddies, spending time in his garden, and attending March Madness. With a quick wit and infectious smile, he filled others with joy. Above all else, family was Bob’s priority. His greatest reward was the time spent with those he loved, and he will be deeply missed.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Karen Murphy; his children, Jeffrey (Ann) Murphy and Kelly (Nick) Marsico; his grandchildren, Shannon (Alex), Ryan (Katie), Ciara, Matthew, and Zachary; and his great-grandchildren, Laila and Luke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Frances Murphy, and his two siblings, Neil and Jean.
Bob’s family extends its most heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at The Vines in Elgin, for the unmatched compassion, kindness and care they provided to Bob and his family.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 2, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee-Huntley Road, Huntley, IL 60142. There will be a visitation at the church, from 9:00 am until the time of Mass. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Gilberts.
