John J. Ryan, 90 of Sun City, Huntley, passed away on Thursday morning, April 17, 2014 following a short illness.
He was born July 27, 1923 in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Anna (Quinn) Ryan. He served in the United States Army Air Force in the China, India, Burma Theater and rose to the rank of Master Sgt. John and his wife Cordellia met while in Calcutta and following their honorable discharges were later married in Houston, Texas on June 1, 1946.
John received his degree in accounting and finance from DePaul University and was then employed for 45 years with Kraft Retail Foods, retiring as a Financial Vice President. Interest in youth development was evident from his participation as a Scout Leader in West Chicago and in the Junior Achievement Program, establishing numerous Junior Achievement Companies. He served as a Squadron Commander in Northbrook, Illinois, then as Commander for Group 22 in the Civil Air Patrol supervising the cadet training program and the search and rescue missions. While in Northbrook he also served as an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of the Brook Parish. Throughout his life he maintained a keen interest in building and flying large scale radio controlled aircraft.
John is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Cordellia "Betty" Ryan of Huntley, his sister, Dorothy Kelly of Mundelein, his children, Timothy (Marilyn) Ryan of Whitehall, Michigan, Susan Mueller of Glendale Heights & Patrick Joseph Ryan of Huntley, his grandchildren, Erich, Jennifer & Melissa, and his great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Veronica, Preston & Livia.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley and from 9:00 until the 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
