Obituary

John M. Mellican, 82 of Sun City, Huntley, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

He was born February 24, 1932 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Francis and Bernadine (Noonan) Mellican. He attended St. Bede Academy in Peru, Illinois for two years; then graduated from Galesburg High School. He received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Art from Knox College. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956. Following his service, he received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois. He was united in marriage to C. Patricia Jordan on June 1, 1963. The couple made their home in Galesburg where John was a partner in the firm, Weber, Griffith & Mellican. Following retirement they moved to Chicago in 1995 and to Sun City, Huntley in 2005. John was an artist and sang with the Prairie Singers.

He is survived by his sons, Sean (Patricia) Mellican of Gurnee, Jordan (Renee) Mellican of Elkhorn, Nebraska, his grandchildren, Abigail, Seamus, Mia & Macy, his brothers, Ted (Marilyn) Mellican of Galesburg, Gene (Alice) Mellican of Lexington, Massachusetts, his sister, Joan (Bob) Dickson of Punta Gorda, Florida, and John’s beloved sidekick Mozart. He was preceded in death by his wife, C. Patricia in 2008 and his daughter, Dena Marie in 1969.

A memorial gathering will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17th at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley, and on Friday, July 18th from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Memorial Mass, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road Huntley. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19th at the St. Joseph Cemetery, Galesburg, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Galesburg Civic Art Center, www.Galesburgarts.org

John was a very dear friend and brother in law and will be missed. He made friends where ever he went and I am so lucky I was one of them. We love and miss you John.
