Obituary

Michael Terrence McSweeney died unexpectedly on July 4, 2015 at his home in La Quinta, CA at the age of 78, following a 20 year battle with COPD.

Mike is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise; his sister, Sr. Jean; his sons, David (Laura) and Mark (Cheryl); and his loved grandchildren, Michael, Tyler, Kristin, Erin, Brian and Kerrigan. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia; his brother, Tom (Joan); and his nephew, Tim.

Mike was born on January 28, 1937 in Rockford, IL. He married Louise in 1960. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1961 with a degree in economics, remained active in the NIU Alumni Association, and retired from a successful career in direct marketing in 1997. His career included chief management positions with DIMAC Marketing Corporation in Missouri; Bear Creek Corporation in Oregon; Harlequin Enterprises, Ltd. in Ontario, Canada, and Metromail Corporation in Iowa, New York, Nebraska and Illinois.
During his career, Mike served nine years on the Board of Directors of the Direct Marketing Association, was a Past Chairman of its Government Affairs Committee, and was a Past Chairman of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. He also served two terms as a Director of the Advertising Mail Marketing Association, and was a past Industry Chairman of the Mailer’s Technical Advisory Committee to the U.S. Postal Service.
In addition to his professional involvements, Mike was a passionate philanthropist and volunteer. He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus in Huntley, IL. He served four terms as a Trustee for Phi Kappa Theta International Fraternity, serving as its President 1997-1999, and served as a Trustee of the Phi Kappa Theta National Foundation.
Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, an avid motor home enthusiast, and above all a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather.

Visitation is scheduled for 9:00am, July 15, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Huntley, IL, with a funeral mass beginning at 10:00am. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, with a reception immediately following at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mike’s life.
