Obituary

Lloyd D. Powell, 61 of Huntley, passed away on January 27, 2012 at the Pepper Family Hospice House, Barrington surrounded by his loving family. He fought a courageous battle with brain cancer during the past two years with determination and great optimism.
He was born August 14, 1950 the son of Lavona and Beverley (Schmadeka) Powell. He was raised in California and at age 15 his father was transferred to Illinois. He was a 1968 graduate of Conant High School and pursued college courses at night while working days to achieve an associates degree in business. He raised his family in the Midwest and worked with many manufacturing companies in positions ranging from Plant Manager to Vice President General Manager and was the key person in a number of companies to handle union negotiations, along with many mergers and acquisitions throughout his career. He settled in the northwest suburbs and on October 5, 1984 was united in marriage to Reva G. Grandt in Des Plaines. He and his wife opened Powell’s Car Wash & Detail Center in Arlington Heights. In 1999 they moved to Sun City Huntley and in 2001 , and together they designed, built and opened a second location in Huntley which they have operated for the last 11 years.
Lloyd loved to fish, play golf, and travel, but his first love was 12” softball playing his treasured position of third base. He enjoyed traveling to tournaments with this team and those times are some of his best memories. He was a talented player, and well respected by all this team members. He played the game well into his late 50’s.
He is survived by his loving wife, Reva, his dear children, Robert (Michelle) Powell of Plainfield, Amy (Scott) Lee of Lake In the Hills, his grandchildren, Jackson, Lauren & Emma Powell and Austin, Kaden, Dylan & Mya Lee, his parents, Lavona & Beverley Powell of Stover, Missouri, his sister, Loretta (Jerry) Jelinek of Fayetteville, Arkansas and many nieces and nephews. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his extended family consisting of his mother-in-law, Lorie Grandt & his sisters-in-law, Karen Grandt, Gina (Greg) Drake & Karla (Kevin) Mowers and will especially be missed by his faithful companion and buddy, Webbster. He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry.
Lloyd was a devoted and loving husband, proud father and grandfather, treasured son, loyal friend, and well respected business owner and boss. He will be dearly missed by all.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 and from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northwestern Memorial Lurie Brain Cancer Foundation, the Animal House Shelter of Huntley, or to the Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois.
