Elizabeth Haviland (Betsy) Zorn died peacefully at her home on March 22, 2012 in Sun City, Huntley, IL, surrounded by her family.
She was born in 1936 in Kingston, NY, the second daughter of LeGrand Haviland, Jr. and Rowena Pratt Haviland. She lived her early years in the Village of Highland, NY, and graduated high school at Oakwood Academy in Poughkeepsie NY. Betsy attended Russell Sage College in Troy, NY where she earned her BS in Nursing in 1958 and met her future husband, Robert Zorn. They were married on June 15, 1958. Over the next fifty-plus years, they lived on both coasts with the Navy, settling in the Midwest.
Betsy was an accomplished nurse in California, Virginia, Indiana, and Wisconsin, having worked in a variety of doctor’s offices and hospitals. She was a member of N.A.M.E, the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts, and started a small miniatures reproduction business, “The Ginger Jar.” She was involved in quilting, card making, and the sewing club at Sun City in Huntley. With several other members of the sewing club, she initiated the making of special hats for women who suffered hair loss from cancer, calling the hats “Head Huggers.” She and her associates made over 7000 hats in 10 years, and distributed them, as charity, to oncologists, hospitals, and cancer treatment centers in the Northern Illinois area.
Betsy will be missed by her many friends and family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bob, and her sons Alan (Kay) of Naperville, James (Lia) of Aurora, and daughter Mary Beth (Troy) of St. Paul, MN, and 5 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter. Her sister Rosalee Boissy of Lowville, NY and brother Harcourt of Bradenton, FL also survive.
