Christopher “C J” Verstraete, 33, of Lake In The Hills, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 14, 2017 in Joliet, Illinois
He was born July 24, 1983 in Des Plaines, the son of Florent and Lisa J. (Sanford) Verstraete. He grew up in Lake Zurich and graduated from Lake Zurich High School in 2001. He was united in marriage to Elise M. Adams on December 15, 2012. The couple made their home in Schaumburg and in 2015 moved to Lake In The Hills. C J worked as a sheet metal worker for Local 265. He enjoyed playing the guitar, jamming with his band mates, camping with family, but mostly cherished the time spent with his son playing video games together. He was very spiritual and had an extremely creative nature.
He is survived by his wife, Elise and his son, James both of Lake In The Hills, his mother, Lisa McCurdy of Huntley, his step-fathers, Barry Magness of Farmers City and Chad McCurdy of Huntley, step-mother, Jana Magness of Farmers City, his brothers, Thomas and Andrew Verstraete of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Jake and Dylan Magness both of Huntley, his step-sisters, Savannah McCurdy of Lansing, Michigan and Ella McCurdy of South Bend, Indiana, his, father-in-law, Glenn Adams of Hyattsville, Maryland, his mother-in-law, Robin Mahar of Lake Moor, his sister-in-law, Tia Adams of Kansas City, Missouri, his grandparents, Judy Sanford of Huntley and Yvonne (Florent II) Verstraete of Skokie, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Florent Verstraete III.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19th at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. We met CJ when he and our son Jonathan were in 6th grade. They were good friends throughout school in Lake Zurich. We got to know CJ very well. He was a kind hearted young man, a truly gentle soul. His memory will be in our hearts forever. May the Lord hold you in the palm of his hand during this difficult time.

I had the pleasure of meeting CJ nearly 15 years ago, through work. Almost immediately CJ became like a little brother to me. He had the unsurpassed ability to drive me bananas but his true superpower was making me and everyone around him smile. I know CJ to be a kind, gentle soul with a heart of gold and an infectious smile that could light any room - to know CJ was to love him. Over the years we lost touch but I often thought of him and always with fond memories and well-wishes. I'm happy to see he was blessed with such a beautiful family and that he was so very loved. My heart breaks knowing the immense loss his family and friends undoubtedly feel at this time. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
